Madrid, Spain

the day of the European Football Cup between Germany and Italy. Madrid was collapsed with Germans and Italians, all singing and high spirits. One of the Lost Paintings has traveled to Germany!

Copa-Europe, near the Santiago Bernabeu football stadium, on the Paseo de la Castellana, a very long street, which runs through Madrid from north to south, and is very nice because you can stroll along the boulevards filled leafy trees.

Plaza de Santa Ana is located in the center, an old neighborhood full of flavor with tapas bars and walking.

‘Lost Paintings’

‘The reason behind doing a series like this is nothing more than making original art and having the art being collected by people passing by the art. All you have to do is peel it off which is done purposely easy without making any damage to neither any …property nor the artwork. I believe that Art is for everyone’. Farzad Kohan

As a participant in this project I wanted the photos to reflect some of the topics that Farzad spoke about.

The notion of making art accessible by allowing people to take the paintings brought up a few concerns for me.

As a wheelchair user, access is really important and it isn’t always an option into many buildings, particularly here in Ireland.

I questioned if this really makes art accessible or is it just encouraging people to steal art.

It certainly put the topics up for debate, this I found really interesting.

As artists our work is often undervalued in terms of monetary value compared to any other business where people expect to get paid for the work they do.

So this also brought up whether we are being robbed anyway if we’re expected to give away our art for free.

Money is certainly not why I do the work I do or I wouldn’t have lasted long in the art world but I think it’s good to question it and to create a discussion around this.

If I undervalue the work I do then why should I expect anyone to have any value on it.

I need to survive at the end of the day and keep a roof over my head.

The photos were taken from my studio and at the entrance of the Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim

I also attached one of ‘The lost Paintings’ to my wheelchair.

This turned it into a moving piece of art, examining different types of ways at looking at art. Is it still art if it’s not hanging in a gallery, etc.

It’s still attached to my wheelchair as I write this. I’m waiting for the day when I notice that it’s gone for another to find it.

I think this project makes for an interesting discussion and I’m thankful to Farzad for my participation.

I have edited the photos in black and white with different borders to create a link between each of the photos.

These can also be seen as the borders that are created due to inaccessible buildings.

The project has also been a farewell to my studio at the centre. Onwards I go.
